Our Forging Process
At Trenton Forging, we take pride in providing industry-leading turnaround times. Our team works diligently to ensure that projects are completed within a few weeks, although timelines will vary based on the size and complexity of your order. We will provide you with an accurate timeline estimate during the quoting process.
Our impression die forging process includes the following steps:
- Creating Custom Dies: First, our expert team develops custom dies for your project using CAD models, blueprints, and other information that you provide to us. Most custom tooling and sample forgings can be produced within two to three weeks.
- Acquiring Raw Materials: Once you approve your tooling design, we’ll order the raw materials needed for your project in the correct grade and diameter from one of our trusted steel mills. We’ll then cut the raw material into billets using our energy-efficient CNC cold saws.
- Preheating & Preforming: We then preheat the billets to a predetermined temperature using our induction heating units and preform them to fit your custom tooling.
- Forging: Our impression die forging process, including preheating and preforming, generally takes between one to three days to complete but will vary depending on the size and complexity of the project. We’ll use our state-of-the-art forging press or air-lift, gravity-drop hammers to compress the preforms (preformed billets) until the final forgings have been produced.
- Shot Blast Cleaning: After the forgings are produced, we remove the flashing and allow them to cool in a controlled environment. We then remove scale and clean the component’s surface via shot blasting, which generally takes one day to complete.
- Quality Assurance: Finally, we ensure the quality of your forgings through comprehensive hand inspections, digital inspections, or magnetic particle inspections. The type of inspection we perform will vary based on application requirements.
