Our Process
Trenton Forging uses our own impression die forging process to produce durable and reliable forged parts for the mining and forestry industries.
Our entire process may take several weeks to complete depending on the quantity and complexity of the order, and includes the following steps:

- Creating Custom Dies/Tooling: The first step in our process is developing custom dies, or tooling. The impression, or cavity, of each die varies based on the component we’re producing. Our engineers work closely with customers to develop tooling from blueprints, CAD models, or sample components. Most custom tooling and sample forgings can be shipped to you within two to three weeks.
- Obtaining Raw Materials: Once custom tooling designs have been approved, we’ll procure raw materials in the right grade and diameter based on the part we’re manufacturing. Then, we’ll cut the material into billets using CNC cold saws. The procurement process may take between one to three weeks. Material shipping times will vary based on the steel mill we’re working with.
- Preheating & Preforming: We’ll then use our energy-efficient induction heating unit to preheat the billets. After the billets have been heated to a predetermined temperature, we’ll preform (shape) the billet to fit into your custom dies.
- Forging: Trenton Forging specializes in impression die forging using air-lift, gravity-drop hammers or fully automated forging presses. The forging process may take one to three days to complete and depends on the size and complexity of your project.
- Shot Blast Cleaning: After your component has gone through our controlled cooling process, we’ll clean the part surface and remove scale via shot blast cleaning. Then, we will perform any post-forging heat treatments (if your application requires any).
- Final Hand Inspections: Finally, our team inspects all forestry or mining forgings by hand. We also provide magnetic particle inspections if required by the application.
