What to Expect From Our Forging Process

Trenton Forging uses impression die forging to produce a wide range of symmetrical and asymmetrical forged automotive parts. We also have some of the fastest turnaround times in the industry.

Most orders can be completed in several weeks, but the timeline will vary based on the volume and complexity of the order. Our entire forging process follows these steps:

    1. Custom Tooling Creation: Our team develops a set of custom dies (tooling) based on blueprints, CAD models, existing parts, and other information you provide. It only takes two to three weeks to produce most custom tooling and sample forgings.
    2. Raw Material Purchasing: After we’ve created your custom tooling and you’ve approved its design, we purchase raw materials for your project in the correct grade and diameter. Once we’ve received the materials, we use our CNC cold saws to cut the material into billets.
    3. Preheating & Preforming: We use an energy-efficient induction heating unit to preheat your billets to a predetermined temperature. Then, we preform (shape) them until they fit your custom tooling.
    4. Forging: Once your billets have been preformed, we can begin forging. Our team either utilizes our state-of-the-art forging press or air-lift, gravity-drop hammers; the type of equipment we choose is based on application requirements. Forging may take one to three days, depending on the volume and complexity of the parts we produce.
    5. Shot Blast Cleaning: After your forgings have been created, we start the finishing process, which involves removing flashing and letting the forgings cool in a controlled environment. Then, we clean the part’s surface and remove scale via shot blasting. Unless heat treatments are required, the finishing process generally takes one day to complete.
    6. Quality Assurance & Inspections: As an ISO-certified automotive forging company, we ensure quality by hand inspecting all forgings before they are shipped. We also provide digital inspections and magnetic particle inspections.

Working with Trenton Forging, I learned that “no” was not in their vocabulary. No matter how challenging a part seemed to be, they went the extra mile to think out of the box in order to find ways to forge that product. Not only did they find a solution, but they did it in a timely manner. James W. Barnthouse
