Our Process

Trenton Forging uses our own impression die forging technique to produce custom forgings for the commercial truck/trailer industry. Our state-of-the-art facility has several air-lift, gravity-drop hammer lines as well as three automated 2500T mechanical press forging lines. Our impression die forging process involves:

  1. Custom Tooling Creation: Our process always starts with creating custom tooling/dies based on the component we’re creating for you, as well as any blueprints or CAD models that you provide to us. You can also send us a sample component which we can reverse engineer using our 3D laser scanning technology. Any sample forgings and custom tooling will be provided to you within two to three weeks.
  2. Purchasing Raw Materials: Once custom dies have been created, we’ll then purchase the correct steel grade and diameter for your component, and cut them into billets using our CNC cold saws. This process may take between one to three weeks; the length of time will vary depending on the steel mill we work with.
  3. Preheating & Preforming: The billets are then sent to pre-heat in our induction heater. Once the billets are preheated to a predetermined temperature, our engineers preform the billet so that it fits into the profile of your custom die.
  4. Forging: Our forging process, including preforming and coolng, takes between one to three days. The length of time will vary depending on the complexity and volume of parts we are forging. In our process, we will either use air-lift, gravity-drop hammers or forging presses to create your component.
  5. Cleaning: Trenton Forging uses shot blast cleaning to remove scale and clean the part surface. We can also heat treat any components if required.
  6. Inspections: To ensure we meet customer expectations, our team hand inspects each forging. If required, we also offer magnetic particle inspections.

Why Work With Trenton Forging?

Trenton Forging has been a trusted name for more than five decades. Since our inception, we’ve been committed to quality and innovation, and continue to find ways to expand our operations and improve our processes. We not only utilize cutting-edge technology, but also prioritize reducing waste by incorporating induction heating units, CNC carbide saws, and other energy-efficient equipment into our processes—we also recycle all steel scrap, which then is transformed back into raw steel. Lastly, to ensure we’re producing the best forgings possible, we also maintain an ISO 9001 accreditation.

Working with Trenton Forging, I learned that “no” was not in their vocabulary. No matter how challenging a part seemed to be, they went the extra mile to think out of the box in order to find ways to forge that product. Not only did they find a solution, but they did it in a timely manner. James W. Barnthouse
