How Our Forging Process Works

Trenton Forging offers some of the fastest turnaround times in the industry, with most projects only taking several weeks to complete. Estimated timelines will vary based on the volume and complexity of your order, but we will always provide you with the most accurate timeline.

Our forging process includes the following steps:

    1. Custom Die Development: Our expert team builds custom dies (tooling) based on CAD models, sample components, blueprints, and other information that you provide to us. Most custom tooling and sample forgings can be produced within two to three weeks.
    2. Raw Material Acquisition: When you approve the final design of your custom tooling, we’ll order the correct grade and diameter raw material needed for your project from one of our steel mills.. Once we receive the raw material, we’ll cut them into billets with our efficient CNC cold saws.
    3. Preheating & Preforming: At Trenton Forging, we utilize induction heating units to reduce waste heat. During this stage, we preheat billets to a predetermined temperature and then preform (or shape) them, so it fits into your custom tooling.
    4. Impression Die Forging: Our team will determine which forging equipment is most efficient for your project. We will either compress preforms (preformed billets) using a forging press or air-lift, gravity-drop hammers. This stage takes between one to three days, depending on the size and complexity of the project.
    5. Shot Blast Cleaning: Once forgings have been produced, we trim away the flashing and leave it to cool in a controlled environment. Then, we’ll remove scale and clean the component’s surface via shot blasting. Shot blasting generally takes one day to complete. However, if your project requires post-forging heat treatments, this can add up to two additional weeks to the project timeline.
    6. Quality Assurance: As an ISO-certified manufacturer, Trenton Forging ensures quality through comprehensive hand inspection, digital inspection  or magnetic particle inspection (depending on application requirements). We will always inspect your forgings before we ship them to you.
